Three suspects have been arrested by Tripura Police following a violent theft attempt that left an elderly couple severely injured in Melaghar. Sadly, the man, Ranjan Das, was found dead at the scene, while his wife Namita Das is currently receiving medical treatment.
According to police sources, a group of thieves broke into the couple’s home late at night, tied up Ranjan Das, and fatally attacked him. The gang also brutally injured Namita Das during the incident, which occurred in the Shri Durga Sangha area under Grantali Gram Panchayat.
Upon receiving reports of the incident, officers from Sonamura Police Station swiftly responded to the scene, accompanied by a large police force including the Sub-Divisional Police Officer. The area residents were shocked to wake up to such a tragic event in their community.
The elderly couple lived alone in the house, as their three sons are living separately. One son serves as a TSR jawan, while the other two are engaged in business in Agartala. The couple resided in the house by themselves.
“We have detained three individuals in connection with the theft and murder, and our investigation is ongoing,” stated Tapas Das, the Officer-in-Charge of Sonamura Police Station.
Former Union Minister Pratima Bhoumik visited the deceased couple’s home upon hearing the news and spoke with their family members. Bhoumik condemned the violent incident and urged society to prevent such heinous acts from occurring in the future. She emphasized the importance of taking immediate steps to steer individuals away from criminal behavior.
