European Union Ambassador and head of delegation Michael Miller emphasized the importance of allowing sufficient time for reforms before the national election in Bangladesh during a recent event organized by the Diplomatic Correspondents’ Association, Bangladesh (DCAB) at the National Press Club in Dhaka.
Miller stated that the decision on when to hold the election is ultimately up to Bangladesh, but he stressed the need for political parties and the interim government to collaborate on necessary reforms. He noted that the EU is willing to provide assistance for the elections, but the timing will be determined by the government of Bangladesh.
The ambassador also addressed the issue of transparency in the trial of those implicated in the casualties of the July mass uprising, emphasizing the importance of ensuring a fair and just process.
Regarding the humanitarian corridor, Miller highlighted the need for equal distribution of relief assistance on both sides of the border, emphasizing the importance of ensuring that everyone in need receives the necessary support.
In response to a question about repatriating money laundered to EU countries, Miller stated that the incumbent government would need to provide the respective countries with sufficient data and information to facilitate the process.
DCAB President AKM Moinuddin moderated the event, while General Secretary Arifuzzaman Mamun delivered the welcoming address. The event provided a platform for discussions on important issues surrounding the upcoming national election in Bangladesh and the need for reforms to ensure a fair and transparent process.
