Former Indian envoy to Bangladesh, Veena Sikri, has made startling claims regarding the recent discussions surrounding Muhammad Yunus’s supposed resignation. Sikri has labeled the entire situation as a “complete drama” orchestrated to divert public attention away from the increased political influence of the Bangladeshi Army.
According to Sikri, there was never any genuine intention of resignation from Muhammad Yunus. She stated that Yunus himself never officially announced any plans to step down. Instead, she believes that the narrative of his resignation was carefully crafted to distract from the army’s growing political assertions.
Sikri pointed to a meeting held on May 21, where Bangladesh’s Army Chief, General Waker-Uz-Zaman, discussed a five-point plan with high-ranking officers. One of the key points in this plan was a call for national elections to be held by the end of the year.
Highlighting the military’s significant role in shaping Bangladesh’s political landscape, Sikri reminded the public that it was the army chief who approved Muhammad Yunus’s appointment as the head chief advisor of an interim government when Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was out of the country last year.
Sikri clarified that this interim government does not have the authority to implement reforms or amend the constitution. She emphasized that it is crucial to understand the limitations of this setup, which is not a caretaker government but an interim one with restricted powers.
With these revelations, the political landscape in Bangladesh appears to be even more complex and nuanced than previously thought. The role of the military in shaping the country’s future has come under scrutiny, especially in light of recent events surrounding Muhammad Yunus’s alleged resignation.
