Agartala: A major gas pipeline leakage triggered widespread panic in the Krishnanagar area of Agartala today. The incident occurred while construction work for the Satsang Smart City project was underway.
According to local reports, an underground gas pipeline was accidentally ruptured during excavation work, causing gas to leak rapidly into the atmosphere. The strong smell of gas and the sound of the leak sent residents into a state of alarm, fearing a potential fire or explosion.
Key Details of the Incident:
- Accidental Damage: The pipeline was reportedly damaged by heavy machinery used by contractors during the Smart City project’s drainage or road expansion work.
- Immediate Response: Upon receiving the alert, a technical team from the Tripura Natural Gas Company Limited (TNGCL) rushed to the spot.
- Containment Efforts: TNGCL workers are currently on-site working to plug the leak and restore the safety of the line. As a precautionary measure, gas supply to the immediate vicinity has been temporarily suspended.
- Recurring Issues: Local residents have expressed deep frustration, noting that this is not an isolated event. There have been repeated allegations of a lack of coordination between Smart City contractors and utility departments like TNGCL and TSECL, leading to frequent damage of gas, water, and power lines.
