The Centre is taking steps to finalize the 125th Amendment of the Constitution in order to empower tribal councils in Sixth Schedule Areas. Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai recently informed Tripura Lok Sabha MP Kriti Devi Debbarman of the progress being made in this regard.
In response to a query raised by Kriti in Lok Sabha on December 16, 2024, regarding the timely passage of the 125th Amendment, MoS Rai stated that discussions have been held with the concerned states on the recommendations outlined in the 223rd Report of the Department Related Parliamentary Standing Committee (DRPSC) of the Ministry of Home Affairs. This is to ensure a final decision on the ‘Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-fifth Amendment) Bill, 2019’ and to move forward with the necessary actions to finalize the Bill.
The amendment aims to empower Autonomous District Councils in Sixth Schedule Areas, which are predominantly inhabited by tribal communities. By strengthening these councils, the government hopes to enhance the representation and autonomy of tribal communities in decision-making processes that affect their lives and livelihoods.
The move to finalize the 125th Amendment reflects the government’s commitment to addressing the needs and concerns of tribal populations in the country. It is a step towards ensuring greater inclusivity and participation of tribal communities in governance and policy-making at the local level.
