Shocking mass suicide in Ahmedabad: Auto driver, wife & 3 kids found dead after consuming poison. Police probe underway to uncover motive.
Ahmedabad, Gujarat – In a devastating incident that has once again raised serious concerns about mental health and financial distress, five members of a family were found dead in a suspected case of mass suicide in Bagodara village on the outskirts of Ahmedabad on Sunday.
Police officials confirmed the victims as Vipul Kanji Waghela, a 34-year-old auto-rickshaw driver; his wife Sonal Waghela; and their three children – Kareena (11), Mayur (8), and Princess (5). All were found dead in their rented residence after reportedly consuming a poisonous substance, according to initial investigations.
❓What Led to the Tragic End?
The motive behind this chilling incident remains unclear. The family, originally from Dholka, had been living in Ahmedabad for some time. According to Superintendent of Police Om Prakash Jat, the initial report suggests poisoning as the cause, but a detailed investigation is ongoing to uncover any underlying triggers, be it financial distress, mental health struggles, or any other family or social factors.
“The man used to drive an auto-rickshaw for a living. As of now, we don’t have any evidence pointing to a definitive reason. The probe will consider all angles,” said SP Jat. The authorities were alerted around 2 a.m., and the bodies have been sent for post-mortem at a local hospital.
Part of a Disturbing Pattern
This case adds to a growing number of mass suicides reported in India in recent years:
- June 2025: Seven members of a family were found dead in a car in Panchkula, Haryana, allegedly due to financial distress.
- October 2023: A family of seven—including three children—died by suspected poisoning in Surat, Gujarat.
- 2018, Delhi (Burari case): Eleven members of a family were found hanging under mysterious circumstances, many gagged and blindfolded.
These heart-wrenching incidents highlight a larger crisis, where social isolation, financial burdens, and untreated mental health issues converge into irreversible tragedies.
Ongoing Investigation
Authorities have assured that a thorough probe is underway, and any signs of foul play or coercion will be seriously considered. Local leaders have also urged for better community mental health support systems to prevent such tragedies from recurring.
