AGARTALA: Tense moments were witnessed in the heart of the capital city today as a large group of job aspirants for the post of Special Executive (Tripura Police) staged a sudden protest demonstration near the official residence of Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha. The protesters, frustrated by a nearly three-year delay in the recruitment process, demanded the immediate publication of the merit list and the issuance of appointment letters.
The Protest: Aspirants Demand Justice
The demonstration began on Tuesday morning when hundreds of candidates, who had cleared their interviews and physical tests long ago, gathered near the Chief Minister’s residence. Carrying placards and raising slogans against the administrative delay, the youth expressed their deep mental and financial distress caused by the prolonged uncertainty.
The recruitment drive for 6,067 Special Executive posts was originally announced in late 2022. While the physical endurance tests and interviews were completed shortly thereafter, the final results have been stuck in limbo ever since.
“We have waited for nearly four years. Our age is slipping away, and we are facing extreme hardship at home. Every time we ask, we are told it will happen ‘soon,’ but ‘soon’ never comes. We want our appointment letters today,” one of the protesting aspirants told Tripura24.in.
Police Action & Detention
As the protesters attempted to move closer to the high-security gates of the Chief Minister’s residence, a large contingent of Tripura Police and TSR (Tripura State Rifles) personnel intervened. Since the assembly was held without prior permission in a restricted zone, the police initially requested the crowd to disperse.
When the protesters refused to budge, security forces forcibly picked up the agitators, loaded them into police vans, and shifted them to the AD Nagar Police Lines. No injuries were reported, but the forceful removal led to heated arguments between the job seekers and the on-duty officers.
Recruitment Deadlock Since 2022
The Special Executive recruitment has been one of the most anticipated employment drives in the state.
- Timeline: Applications were invited in November 2022.
- Process: The selection involved a rigorous physical test and a personal interview.
- Current Status: Despite repeated assurances from the state government that the “merit list is under process,” no official notification has been released for over 36 months.
What’s Next?
Senior police officials stated that the protesters were detained to maintain law and order and to prevent traffic congestion in the high-security zone. While the aspirants were released later in the evening, they have issued a stern warning to the state administration: if the merit list is not published within the next week, they will launch a state-wide “Amarn Anshan” (Hunger Strike unto Death).
The Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) has not yet issued an official statement regarding today’s incident or the specific timeline for the Special Executive appointments.
