The Tripura Pradesh Youth Congress (TPYC) organized a massive Mass Sit-in (Gana Abhashthan) in front of the Congress Bhavan today, demanding the immediate and unconditional release of the Indian Youth Congress (IYC) National President, Uday Bhanu Chib.
The protest comes in the wake of Chib’s arrest by the Delhi Police on Tuesday morning, an action that has sparked nationwide outrage among Congress supporters.
Background of the Arrest
According to reports, the Delhi Police detained Uday Bhanu Chib following a shirtless protest and the raising of slogans against Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the recently concluded AI Impact Summit. The Youth Congress chief was reportedly arrested after a grueling 20-hour interrogation session by the authorities.
Protest in Agartala
Led by state leadership, dozens of Youth Congress activists gathered at the Congress Bhavan premises in Agartala, raising slogans against the Central Government and the Delhi Police. The protesters termed the arrest as an “undemocratic attempt to silence the voice of the youth.”
Key points raised during the protest:
- Political Vendetta: Leaders alleged that the arrest is a clear case of political harassment aimed at suppressing the rising influence of the Youth Congress.
- Right to Protest: TPYC leaders argued that peaceful protest, regardless of the form, is a fundamental right in a democracy and does not warrant such harsh police action.
- Ultimatum: The state unit warned that if Chib is not released unconditionally and immediately, the Youth Congress will intensify its movement across every district of Tripura.
“Attack on Democracy”
Addressing the gathering, a senior TPYC spokesperson stated:
”The arrest of our National President after 20 hours of questioning for a symbolic protest is a dark day for Indian democracy. The BJP government is afraid of the youth who are questioning the Prime Minister’s policies. We will not back down until Uday Bhanu Chib is freed.”
The sit-in protest continued for several hours, with leaders and workers vowing to take the movement to the streets if their demands are not met.
