The Bangladesh Assistant High Commission in Agartala observed “Great Martyrs’ Day and International Mother Language Day 2026” with profound dignity and patriotic fervor. The day’s program began at sunrise, marking the historic sacrifice of the language martyrs of 1952.
Solemn Ceremonies and Tributes
The proceedings commenced with the formal hoisting of the national flag of Bangladesh. To mark the day of mourning, the flag was hoisted and then lowered to half-mast by the Assistant High Commissioner, accompanied by the playing of the national anthem.
Following the flag ceremony, officials and staff of the mission performed the iconic language movement song, “Amar Bhaier Rokte Rangano Ekushey February,” in a moving procession. A floral tribute was then paid at the temporary Shaheed Minar (Martyrs’ Monument) erected within the mission premises to honor those who laid down their lives for the right to speak their mother tongue, Bengali.
Key Presence
The event was led by Assistant High Commissioner Arif Mohammad (joined by senior officials including First Secretary and other diplomatic staff). Speaking on the occasion, the Assistant High Commissioner highlighted the global significance of the day, which was recognized by UNESCO to promote linguistic and cultural diversity worldwide.
”Ekushey February is the foundation of our independence and our national identity. It is a day that teaches the world the importance of mother tongues and the courage to protect one’s heritage,” stated the mission head.
The mission also organized a special prayer (Munajat) seeking the eternal peace of the departed souls of the martyrs and the continued prosperity of the nation.
