International Mother Language Day was observed with profound respect and due solemnity at the Communist Party of India (Marxist) state headquarters in Melarmath, Agartala. The event was organized to honor the language martyrs and to emphasize the importance of linguistic diversity and the protection of mother tongues.
Tributes Paid to Language Martyrs
The ceremony commenced with the hoisting of the party flag followed by the floral tribute at the martyrs’ column. Leader of Opposition (LoP) and CPI(M) State Secretary Jitendra Chaudhury led the party workers and senior leaders in paying their respects.
Speaking on the occasion, Jitendra Chaudhury highlighted the historical significance of February 21 (Ekushey February), noting that the struggle for language rights is inextricably linked to the struggle for democratic and cultural identity.
”Our mother tongue is not just a medium of communication; it is our identity and the foundation of our culture. We must stand united against any attempt to suppress regional languages or impose a single language on a diverse nation like India,” said Chaudhury.
Focus on Linguistic Diversity
The program saw participation from several senior leaders of the party, including state committee members and representatives from various frontal organizations. The speakers emphasized that in a state like Tripura, where Bengali and Kokborok coexist as major languages, the spirit of International Mother Language Day serves as a reminder to promote harmony and mutual respect among all linguistic groups.
The CPI(M) leadership also took the opportunity to voice their concerns regarding the alleged “linguistic imposition” by the central government, reiterating their commitment to safeguarding the constitutional rights of every citizen to speak and study in their mother tongue.
