Indian Premier League (IPL) teams are considering giving their overseas players the freedom to decide whether they want to return for the second half of the tournament, with IPL 2025 set to resume later this week following a ceasefire agreement between India and Pakistan.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) suspended the remainder of IPL 2025 last Friday in response to cross-border tensions, with no formal communication yet sent to the teams regarding the timeline for the tournament’s resumption.
“We will not push anyone and will leave it to them. Yes, this is a force majeure, an unforeseen event which is beyond anyone’s control,” the CEO of a certain team told RevSportz.
A force majeure is a contractual clause that excuses individuals from fulfilling their contracts in case of an extraordinary event beyond their control. This clause makes a new rule introduced by BCCI before IPL 2025, which banned players withdrawing from the tournament after being picked at the mega auction, unnecessary.
As of Sunday, May 11, teams were still awaiting guidance from the BCCI. A meeting between BCCI officials and the central government representatives is expected on Monday, where the timeline for the remainder of the Indian Premier League will likely be finalized and approved.
BCCI is reportedly aiming to complete IPL 2025 within the month, and with the ceasefire in place, the plan is expected to move forward. However, there has been no indication yet of any team management contacting their overseas players. Reports suggest that teams are waiting for more clarity and specific dates before recalling their foreign players.
While most overseas players are believed to be willing to return if IPL 2025 resumes later this week, representatives of several teams have stated that they will wait for official confirmation before making any decisions. Stay tuned for further updates as the situation develops.
