Amid ongoing conflict between Israel and Iran, tensions escalated further on Monday as Iran launched a limited missile attack on a U.S. military base in Qatar in retaliation for American strikes on its nuclear sites. In response to the attack, U.S. President Donald Trump claimed that Israel and Iran had agreed to a “complete and total ceasefire,” although both countries did not immediately acknowledge any such agreement.
Following the missile attack on the U.S. bases in Qatar and Iraq, Qatar, which hosts a significant U.S. military presence, condemned the attack on Al Udeid Air Base and confirmed that no injuries were reported. Qatar’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Majed al-Ansari, stated that the missiles were intercepted by Qatari air defenses.
President Trump announced on social media platform Truth Social that a 24-hour phased-in ceasefire was set to begin at midnight Eastern time on Tuesday, giving Israel and Iran six hours to complete their ongoing missions. Trump declared that this ceasefire would mark an “Official END” to the conflict, although the Israeli military and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office did not immediately respond to the statement. Iran also remained silent on the matter.
Iran’s missile attack on Monday was seen as a signal that the country was willing to de-escalate tensions in the region. The attack was said to match the number of bombs dropped by the U.S. on Iranian nuclear sites over the weekend, with Iran targeting the base in Qatar due to its location outside of populated areas.
As the conflict entered its 11th day, both Israel and Iran continued to exchange airstrikes, causing widespread fear and disruption among civilians in both countries. The conflict began when Israel launched attacks on Iran’s nuclear facilities in response to the perceived threat of Tehran’s advancing nuclear program.
