In response to the recent natural disasters affecting the region, a special mock drill was conducted in the Shantir Bazar Upazila by the local government authorities. The heavy monsoon rains in recent times have led to flooding in various areas, with the southern district experiencing the highest rainfall in recent years. As a result, extensive damage has been reported in the southern district due to the sudden inundation of floodwaters, and the lack of adequate preparedness for dealing with the monsoon season has left many residents vulnerable to harm.
In light of the current situation and the impact of the relentless monsoon rains, a special mock drill was conducted on Wednesday morning in the Gandha Ang Tripara Para, Mohuripur, and Shantir Bazar Mukut Auditorium areas of the Shantir Bazar Upazila, initiated by the local government authorities. Various departments, including the Tenth Battalion of the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), the Shantir Bazar Fire Service and Civil Defense, and personnel from the local administration, participated in the drill. The mock drill focused on how to protect oneself from land erosion and water, as well as how the local authorities can assist residents in protecting themselves. Training was provided to educate participants on these important aspects.
Shantir Bazar Upazila Executive Officer Monoj Kumar Saha provided detailed information about the drill to the media. He informed that a total of 38 people were rescued from three different locations in today’s drill. Among them, 10 were severely injured and were admitted to various hospitals, 23 sustained minor injuries and were provided with primary medical treatment, and sadly, 5 people lost their lives due to land erosion. Additionally, domestic animals and birds were also rescued during today’s operation, as informed by the Upazila Executive Officer.
