With Makar Sankranti to be celebrated tomorrow, markets are witnessing a festive display as traders have set up stalls selling traditional items such as tillai (sesame sweets), jaggery, batasha, rice flour, kadma and other essentials associated with the harvest festival. These items are in high demand during the festival, which marks the transition of the Sun into the zodiac sign of Capricorn. However, despite the seasonal buzz and increased footfall, traders say business is not as brisk as in previous years. Many shopkeepers expressed concern over lower sales, attributing the slowdown to rising prices of raw materials and reduced purchasing power among consumers. Buyers, they said, are opting for smaller quantities and cutting back on non-essential purchases. While the festive spirit remains visible across the markets, traders are hopeful that last-minute shopping on the eve of Makar Sankranti may bring some relief and improve overall sales.
