In a major crackdown on illegal trade, authorities in Tripura’s Dharmanagar have seized a massive consignment of Burmese cigarettes being smuggled into the region. The operation led to the arrest of two individuals allegedly involved in the illegal transport of foreign-brand cigarettes.
Sources revealed that the confiscated items consisted of a large quantity of Burmese-origin cigarettes, which were being transported without proper documentation or permits. The seizure has raised serious concerns about the growing black market trade across the Indo-Myanmar border.
What has further intensified the situation are emerging allegations of corruption linked to the smuggling network. According to local reports, officials suspect that certain insiders may have been facilitating the passage of contraband items, possibly in exchange for bribes. An internal investigation is said to be underway to identify any officials who may have been complicit.
This is not the first time Dharmanagar has come under the spotlight for smuggling-related activities. Experts warn that the porous borders and lack of stringent monitoring make the region highly vulnerable to such illegal operations.
Authorities have assured the public that strict action will be taken against all those involved and that steps are being taken to tighten security at key checkpoints across the state.
The two arrested individuals are currently in police custody and are being interrogated for further details on the supply chain and those operating behind the scenes.
