The Meghalaya police have uncovered chilling details of the murder of Indore-based businessman Raja Raghuvanshi, revealing a sinister plot to murder a woman and burn her body to make it appear as that of Raja’s wife, Sonam. This plan was orchestrated by Raj Kushwaha, a suspected boyfriend of Sonam, who is believed to be the mastermind behind the murder.
During the interrogation of Sonam, Raj, and three others who were arrested in connection with the killing of Raja Raghuvanshi, it was revealed that Sonam fled from Meghalaya in a burqa and traveled to Madhya Pradesh using various modes of transportation. The conspiracy to eliminate Raja was hatched in Indore shortly before his wedding with Sonam on May 11. According to East Khasi Hills district Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem, Raja was the mastermind behind the plot, and Sonam had agreed to the plan.
After Raja and Sonam went missing on May 23 in Meghalaya, Raja’s body was found in a gorge near Weisawdong Falls on June 2. Sonam, who had been missing, emerged in Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh, on June 9 and surrendered to the police. Sonam’s boyfriend Raj Kushwaha, along with three others, were also arrested in connection with the murder.
The group had planned the murder of Raja in Indore in February and had thought of ways to make Sonam disappear after the killing. They initially planned to eliminate Raja in Guwahati but changed their plans and went to Sohra in Meghalaya, where they executed the murder.
The police recovered a raincoat and a two-wheeler used in the crime when Sonam was thought to be missing. Sonam wore a burqa given to her by Raj and traveled to various locations before being apprehended by the police. The police are confident in their investigation and plan to file a charge sheet within the mandatory 90 days.
All five suspects have been remanded to eight days of police custody as the Special Investigation Team continues to probe the murder. The police are seeking assistance from authorities in Assam and other states to gather evidence and reconstruct the crime scene. They are also verifying if any of the suspects had conducted a recce of the area before the crime took place.
