KOLKATA: In a significant political move ahead of the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, former Tripura Chief Minister and senior BJP leader Shri Biplab Kumar Deb visited the West Bengal Legislative Assembly today. His visit was marked by a high-level closed-door meeting with the BJP’s legislative wing to fine-tune the party’s roadmap for the upcoming polls.
Strategic Meeting at LoP’s Chambers
The meeting took place in the chamber of the Leader of the Opposition (LoP), Shri Suvendu Adhikari, within the Assembly premises. Approximately 60 BJP legislators attended the session, which lasted nearly an hour.
Biplab Kumar Deb, who has been appointed as the Saha Prabhari (Deputy In-Charge) for the West Bengal elections, took stock of the ground reality in various constituencies. The discussions reportedly focused on:
- Outreach Programs: MLAs were directed to launch intensive door-to-door campaigns to highlight the “erosion of public support” for the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC).
- Countering TMC Narratives: Strategy to expose alleged corruption, law and order issues, and administrative interference in central development schemes.
- Ground-Level Monitoring: Deb urged the MLAs to remain on the ground 24/7 to ensure the protection of party workers and voters in the lead-up to the elections.
“A Bengali Leader for Bengal”: Suvendu Adhikari
In a move that caught the attention of political observers, Suvendu Adhikari introduced Biplab Kumar Deb to the legislative party not just as a former CM, but as a “Bengali-speaking, Bengali leader.” This branding is seen as a strategic counter to the TMC’s “Outsider” (Bohiragoto) narrative often used against BJP leaders from other states. By highlighting Deb’s cultural and linguistic roots, Adhikari signaled that the BJP is fielding leaders who deeply understand the Bengali ethos and the shared heritage between Tripura and West Bengal.
Biplab Deb’s Address to MLAs
Addressing the legislators, Biplab Kumar Deb expressed his confidence in the party’s success.
“I have been given this responsibility at a crucial juncture, and I have never failed in any assignment I have taken up. With your dedication, we will ensure that the anger of the people against the current government reflects in the EVMs. We are entering this House with a mission to form a majority,” Shri Biplab Deb reportedly told the MLAs.
Heightened Political Atmosphere
The visit comes during the inaugural day of the Budget Session of the West Bengal Assembly. BJP MLA Agnimitra Paul, who was also present, confirmed that while the meeting touched upon the state’s political situation, there was no discussion regarding candidate tickets at this stage, as that remains the prerogative of the party’s top leadership.
The synergy between Biplab Kumar Deb’s organizational experience in Tripura and Suvendu Adhikari’s grassroots influence in Bengal is being viewed as a formidable challenge for the ruling TMC as the state inches closer to the 2026 electoral battle.
