Mizoram is experiencing a significant rise in cybercrime, with financial frauds emerging as the most prevalent type of offense. Official data reveals that Mizoram recorded a high number of cybercrime cases in 2022, and authorities have recovered a substantial amount of money in connection with fraud cases.
According to records from the state cybercrime police station, financial frauds accounted for 56.38% of the 321 cybercrime cases registered in Mizoram between January 2020 and March 11, 2025. A total of 181 cases of financial crimes were reported during this period, with online banking fraud and cheating by impersonation being the primary offenses.
The data also indicates the occurrence of other cybercrimes in Mizoram, including identity theft (32 cases), child pornography (16 cases), social media harassment (9 cases), copyright infringement (7 cases), spreading false rumors (5 cases), and hacking (1 case).
The year 2022 saw the highest number of financial crimes, with 107 cases registered. In total, more than Rs 1.42 crore has been recovered in financial fraud cases between 2021 and March 11, 2025.
Mizoram reported the highest overall number of cybercrime cases in 2022, with 158 cases, followed by 72 cases in 2023. The number of cybercrime cases decreased to 41 in 2024, of which 17 were related to financial crimes and 15 to sexual harassment. In the current year, up to March 11, 2025, 13 cybercrime cases have been registered, including 6 cases of sexual harassment and 4 cases of financial fraud.
Since 2021, authorities in Mizoram have arrested 113 individuals, including 8 juveniles, in connection with cybercrime cases, and 40 individuals have been convicted.
