A violent incident occurred in Sirajganj, Bangladesh on Tuesday when a mob of miscreants attacked the ancestral home of Nobel Prize winner Rabindranath Tagore. The mob, believed to be affiliated with Jamaat-e-Islami and Hefazat-e-Islam, vandalized Tagore’s ancestral home known as Kutchery House.
Upon receiving the information, police from the Shahzadpur station arrived at the scene, but no action was taken against the accused. Station in-charge Aslam Ali stated that the matter is currently under investigation, although no FIRs have been registered yet. The commotion lasted for quite some time, with the police eventually leaving the scene while the miscreants remained until evening.
Tagore’s two-storey ancestral home, located approximately 125 km from the capital Dhaka, has been designated as a museum. It holds historical significance as Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore’s grandfather Dwarkanath Tagore built the Kutchery House in 1840. The miscreants involved in the attack had allegedly pre-planned the vandalism conspiracy.
According to sources, the miscreants claimed that the museum director Sirajul Islam had held a person hostage and assaulted them on Tuesday. However, Hefazat-e-Islam denied any involvement in such an incident. Police investigations did not find any evidence of a hostage situation at the museum, but a crowd quickly gathered at the scene.
A shopkeeper near the museum, speaking on condition of anonymity, revealed that the miscreants had planned the attack in advance. He explained, “Local people were not involved in the attacks, as Tagore’s museum attracts a large number of tourists and serves as a local attraction. This helps us shopkeepers earn our livelihood. Before the attack, the extremists had also held a rally in the area.”
The mob’s premeditated attack on Tagore’s ancestral home has caused outrage and concern in the community. Authorities are continuing their investigation into the incident as they work to ensure the safety and preservation of this important historical site.
