Veteran wicketkeeper-batter MS Dhoni is likely to take over the captaincy of Chennai Super Kings (CSK) for their Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 clash against Delhi Capitals (DC) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Saturday afternoon. This indication came from CSK batting coach Michael Hussey during the pre-match press conference, as the participation of regular skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad remains uncertain due to a hand injury.
Ruturaj Gaikwad sustained the injury during CSK’s recent match against Rajasthan Royals when he was struck on the hands by a delivery from teammate Tushar Deshpande. Addressing the media on the eve of the DC game, Hussey stated, “Ruturaj Gaikwad’s participation in tomorrow’s game will depend on how well he recovered. He is still sore and we would take a call as to how he bats in the nets today.”
The injury to the top-order batter has cast doubt on his availability for the crucial home game against Delhi Capitals. When questioned about potential captaincy alternatives if Gaikwad is ruled out, Hussey hinted strongly at MS Dhoni stepping in. “If he doesn’t play, not sure who will lead. But there is a strong chance that a young wicketkeeper might fill in,” Hussey said, a clear reference to the experienced Dhoni.
The prospect of MS Dhoni leading CSK again will undoubtedly excite the home crowd at Chepauk. While Ruturaj Gaikwad has been in good form, his potential absence would be a significant blow to the team. The final decision on Gaikwad’s fitness and the captaincy will likely be made after assessing his condition during Friday’s net session.
