Mumbai Indians took to social media on Friday to congratulate star Indian fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah for creating a world record in the Indian Premier League (IPL). The 31-year-old from Ahmedabad became the first bowler in the world to take at least 15 wickets in nine IPL seasons. Bumrah, who made his IPL debut in 2013 for Mumbai Indians, has a total of 181 wickets in 142 IPL matches.
In the ongoing season of the IPL, Bumrah has already picked up 16 wickets in just nine matches. His standout performance came in MI’s 13th league match against Delhi Capitals, where he finished with figures of 3 for 12 in 3.2 overs. This performance not only helped MI qualify for the playoffs but also solidified Bumrah’s place in the record books.
Over the years, Bumrah has been a consistent performer in the IPL. Despite missing the 2023 edition due to a back injury, he made a strong comeback last year by taking 20 wickets in 13 matches. This season, he missed the first four matches due to a lower back injury but has been impressive since his return.
Bumrah’s record-breaking feat in the IPL has cemented his position as one of the top bowlers in the tournament’s history. He is followed by Yuzvendra Chahal and Lasith Malinga in the list of bowlers who have dismissed at least 15 batters the most times in an IPL season.
Next, Bumrah will be seen in action for Mumbai Indians on Monday when they take on Punjab Kings in the IPL 2025. The match is scheduled to take place at Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur. If certain results go their way, Mumbai Indians could finish as table-toppers and feature in the first qualifier on May 29 in Mullanpur.
