In a major event to commemorate National Science Day 2026, a state-level program was organized today at the Pragna Bhavan in Agartala. The event, held under the auspices of the Tripura State Council for Science & Technology, saw a large gathering of students, educators, and scientists dedicated to promoting the spirit of inquiry and rational thinking.
The program was graced by the Minister for Science, Technology, and Environment, Shri Animesh Debbarma, as the Chief Guest.
Focus on “Women in Science”
Aligning with the national theme for 2026, “Women in Science: Catalysing Viksit Bharat”, the discussions centered on the pivotal role of women researchers and innovators in driving India’s progress.
- Empowering Students: The Minister highlighted that the number of girls pursuing STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields in Tripura has seen a significant rise.
- Innovation Fund: Mention was made of the government’s ongoing support through financial grants for student-led research projects and DNA Clubs across the state.
Scientific Temper vs. Superstition
In his keynote address, Minister Animesh Debbarma, himself a man of science, delivered a strong message against social regressive practices.
”Science is not just limited to books; it is a weapon against the darkness of blind faith and superstition that still plagues parts of our society. Our students must be the torchbearers of truth based on logic and experimentation. A ‘Viksit Tripura’ is only possible when we cultivate a scientific mindset in every village and town,” the Minister asserted.
Exhibitions and Awards
The Pragna Bhavan event featured:
- Project Showcases: Innovative models by school students focusing on indigenous technologies and sustainable development.
- Anti-Superstition Demonstrations: Live shows aimed at debunking common myths through scientific explanations.
- Recognition: Certificates and awards were presented to students who excelled in various science competitions held across the state leading up to the day.
Dignitaries Present
Apart from the Minister, the event was attended by senior officials of the Science & Technology Department, including the Secretary and Director of the Council, along with prominent professors from NIT Agartala and Tripura University.
The celebration concluded with a pledge to take science from the laboratories to the grassroots level, ensuring that technology serves as a tool for the holistic development of Tripura.
