In a significant stride toward strengthening the nation’s statistical framework, Shri Bikash Debbarma, Hon’ble Minister for Planning (Statistics), Government of Tripura, formally inaugurated a National Level Workshop on the Index of Industrial Production (IIP) today. The high-profile event commenced at 10:00 AM at the Pragna Bhawan, Agartala, bringing together top statisticians and policy experts from across the country.
Strengthening Data for a ‘Viksit Bharat’
The workshop is a collaborative effort between the Directorate of Economics and Statistics (DES), Tripura, and the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI), Government of India. In his keynote address, Minister Debbarma emphasized that accurate industrial data is the backbone of realistic economic planning.
“As we move toward the vision of a Viksit Bharat by 2047, the reliability of our industrial indices is paramount,” Minister Debbarma stated. “Tripura is proud to host this national dialogue, which focuses on the systematic revision of the IIP base year to better reflect the evolving industrial landscape of our states and the nation.”
Key Highlights of the Workshop
The two-day technical symposium (February 5–6) aims to address several scientific and administrative challenges in data collection:
- Base Year Revision: Discussions are centered on transitioning to a more current base year to capture new-age industries and technological shifts.
- National Participation: Senior officials and Directors of Economics and Statistics from states including Punjab, Haryana, Assam, Meghalaya, and Gujarat are in attendance.
- Digital Integration: Experts from MoSPI, including Director General N.K. Santoshi, highlighted the role of real-time data entry and AI-driven validation in reducing the lag in IIP reporting.
Tripura’s Rising Stature in Governance
The choice of Agartala as the venue for this national workshop underscores the state’s growing importance in the regional and national economic discourse. Minister Debbarma noted that such workshops empower local officials with global standards of methodology, ensuring that Tripura’s industrial growth—particularly in handloom, handicrafts, and rubber—is accurately represented in national figures.
The inaugural session concluded with a vote of thanks by Chiranjib Ghosh, Joint Director of DES Tripura, who acknowledged the unwavering support of the central ministry in fostering a robust statistical ecosystem in the Northeast.
