A new cashless treatment scheme for road accident victims has been introduced nationwide, providing up to Rs 1.5 lakh per accident per person. The scheme, which came into effect on May 5, 2025, aims to ensure that victims of road accidents receive timely and necessary medical care without financial burden.
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways issued a gazette notification outlining the details of the scheme. According to the notification, any person involved in a road accident caused by a motor vehicle will be eligible for cashless treatment under the scheme. The National Health Authority (NHA) will oversee the implementation of the program in collaboration with law enforcement, hospitals, and State Health Agencies.
Victims will have access to cashless treatment at designated hospitals for up to Rs 1.5 lakh per person for a maximum of seven days following the accident. Treatment at hospitals not designated under the scheme will be limited to stabilization purposes as per specified guidelines.
Each state or Union Territory will have a State Road Safety Council serving as the nodal agency for scheme implementation, responsible for coordinating with the NHA for hospital onboarding, victim treatment, payment processing, and other related matters. A steering committee appointed by the central government will monitor the scheme’s progress and effectiveness.
The Cashless Treatment of Road Accident Victims Scheme, 2025, builds on a pilot program launched by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways in March 2024 to provide immediate medical care to road accident victims. This new nationwide scheme aims to further enhance support and assistance for those affected by road accidents, ensuring they receive the necessary medical attention without financial constraints.
