Tragic suicide of newlywed bride after facing torture by in-laws! Administration at the doorstep of the family in hopes of justice!!
Another newlywed bride falls victim to torture and takes her own life. Within three months of marriage, she faced extreme abuse at her in-laws’ house in exchange for bringing two lakh taka from her father’s house. Unable to bear the torment, the young bride committed suicide by jumping in front of a train. The incident took place in Ward No. 6 of Gobindapur area under the jurisdiction of Churaibari Police Station in North Tripura district.
The victim, Monika Shukla Vaidya, daughter of residents Benu Shukla Vaidya and Mira Shukla Vaidya, married Shanku Shukla Vaidya, son of Shashidhar Shukla Vaidya from Khailashahar’s Bhagypur village in 2023. Right after the traditional three-month honeymoon period, the bride began facing severe abuse at the hands of her father-in-law Shashidhar and mother-in-law Mukta Shukla Vaidya with the support of her husband Shanku Shukla Vaidya. It was revealed that they demanded two lakh taka from the bride’s family, despite her husband being employed in the Indian Army. The bride’s mental health deteriorated over the seven months, leading her to the brink of breaking point.
Desperate, Monika decided to return to her father’s house in an emotional state, where she gave birth to their child. During this time, several family meetings were held, and Monika was taken back to her husband’s house multiple times. It was discovered that aside from the abusive treatment, the army personnel was involved in an illicit relationship with another woman, involving explicit photos on his phone. When Monika protested, she was subjected to severe physical abuse, which she reported to the locals at her father-in-law’s house.
As the situation escalated, Shanku left for his duty station in a distant location. On the 18th of the following month, Shanku and an unknown individual visited his father-in-law’s house in Gobindapur and brutally assaulted Monika before dragging her out of the house. Monika managed to capture the incident on camera before being humiliated and decided to end her life by jumping in front of a moving train that evening. The next day, the railway police recovered her body and handed it over to Dharamnagar district hospital.
Currently, the deceased bride leaves behind a two-year-old orphaned child. Monika’s mother, Mira Shukla Vaidya, has filed a written complaint with the Churaibari Police Station, registering a case under the Indian Penal Code section 85/80/3(5). The investigation is ongoing under the supervision of Sub-Inspector B. Jerin Puyia from the district police. Now the question remains – will the orphaned child and her family receive legal justice?
