Nine cities from eight northeastern states have received Ministerial Awards for Promising Swachh Shehar (Promising Clean City) as part of the Swachh Survekshan 2024-25, showcasing the region’s dedication to urban cleanliness.
The awarded cities include Jairampur (Arunachal Pradesh), North Lakhimpur and Guwahati (Assam), Jiribam (Manipur), Shillong (Meghalaya), Lunglei (Mizoram), Jalukie (Nagaland), Mangan (Sikkim), and Khowai (Tripura).
These awards were presented by President Droupadi Murmu at a ceremony held by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi. A total of 34 cities from across India were recognized in different categories, showcasing the country’s progress in sanitation and urban hygiene.
This year’s evaluation introduced a more refined and inclusive framework, aimed at bridging the gap between large and small urban centers. The ministry emphasized that smaller cities were given an equal opportunity to compete with larger cities in the survey, with the top-performing cities from each state being acknowledged as Promising Swachh Shehars.
Khowai city in Tripura was honored with the State-Level Promising City award. State Social Welfare and Social Education Minister Tinku Roy, who accepted the award, expressed the significance of the recognition in a public statement.
“I had the honor of receiving this prestigious award from Union Minister for Housing and Urban Development, Manohar Lal Khattar Ji, in the presence of President Droupadi Murmu at Vigyan Bhawan in Delhi today. This is not just a proud moment for Khowai city but for the entire state of Tripura,” Roy shared on social media. “Khowai has now become a beacon for the entire state, showing the way towards a clean, green, and modern Tripura.”
The Swachh Survekshan Awards were categorized into Super Swachh League Cities, top three clean cities in various population categories, a special category (including Ganga Towns, Cantonment Boards, SafaiMitra Suraksha, and Mahakumbh), and State-Level Awards for Promising Clean Cities.
