The Central government has announced that Northeastern states, along with others, will participate in a nationwide civic defense mock drill on May 7. This decision comes amidst escalating tensions between India and Pakistan following the April 22 terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam, which resulted in the loss of 26 lives.
The nationwide drill, scheduled for tomorrow, will take place at a total of 259 locations across the country, categorized into three levels. The Northeastern states will participate in categories II and III of the drill.
In Arunachal Pradesh, locations such as Aalo, Itanagar, Tawang, and Hayuliang will face the drill in category II, while Bomdila falls under category III. Assam will see drills in cities like Dibrugarh, Jorhat, and Guwahati, among others. Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim, and Tripura are also part of the mock drill.
The districts selected for the drill, including those in border states like Rajasthan, Punjab, Jammu & Kashmir, West Bengal, and the Northeast, have been instructed to simulate multi-hazard scenarios during the exercise.
Air raid sirens will be sounded in various parts of the country on May 7 as civilians participate in the mock drills aimed at preparing them for self-protection in times of war. Home Secretary Govind Mohan is leading a crucial meeting to assess and coordinate civil defense preparedness across the country ahead of the nationwide mock drill.
The meeting includes Chief Secretaries and Civil Defense Chiefs from various states, with a special focus on the 244 designated Civil Defense Districts that were notified in 2010. This nationwide mock drill aims to enhance the country’s preparedness for any potential threats and ensure the safety and security of its citizens.
