Oil India begins its first-ever hydrocarbon drilling in Tripura’s Debtamura Reserve Forest, marking a significant step under India’s HELP regime.
In a historic move, Oil India Limited (OIL) commenced its first hydrocarbon drilling in Tripura on May 11, 2025. The Debtamura#1 well, located in the Baramura-Debtamura Reserve Forest of Gomati District, marks a significant milestone under India’s Hydrocarbon Exploration and Licensing Policy (HELP) regime.
The drilling site is approximately 120 kilometers from Agartala, near the Indo-Bangladesh border. OIL faced numerous challenges, including rugged terrain, dense vegetation, narrow hilly roads, and a prolonged monsoon season causing floods and landslides. Despite these obstacles, the team successfully initiated the project, reflecting the spirit of Atmanirbhar Bharat.
Key officials present at the spudding ceremony included Rupjyoti Phukan (RCE, OIL), Maj General (Retd.) Praveen Mathur (Advisor – Security, DGH), Sutirtha Paul (Joint Director, Directorate of Industries and Commerce), Chitra Mohan Borah (Executive Director and HoD, Frontier Basin Project, OIL), Arunav Baruah (Chief General Manager, OIL), and Pankaj Kumar Biswas (General Manager, GAIL).
