In a significant move to empower local women entrepreneurs, the Land Ports Authority of India (LPAI), in collaboration with the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) and support teams, organized a one-day special trade fair at the Agartala Land Port today. The event exclusively featured products and handicrafts manufactured by various Women Self-Help Groups (SHGs) from the border regions.
The fair aimed to provide a platform for rural women to showcase their entrepreneurial skills and find a wider market for their indigenous products among passengers and tourists using the international transit point.
Empowering Border Communities
The exhibition featured a wide array of products, including traditional handloom textiles, eco-friendly bamboo crafts, organic food items, and local delicacies. By utilizing the strategic location of the land port, the organizers sought to:
- Promote “Vocal for Local”: Encouraging international and domestic travelers to purchase locally-made goods.
- Economic Independence: Providing direct income opportunities for women-led micro-enterprises.
- Skill Recognition: Highlighting the craftsmanship and quality of Tripura’s SHG products on an international stage.
Administrative Support
Officials from the Land Ports Authority emphasized that such initiatives are part of a larger central vision to transform border trading points into hubs of community development. The logistical support from the Home Ministry ensured a smooth coordination between the SHG members and the port administration, allowing the women to interact directly with buyers.
Visitors and daily commuters at the Akhaura border expressed high praise for the initiative, noting that such fairs add a cultural dimension to the transit experience while supporting the grassroots economy.
