OpenAI, a leading artificial intelligence research lab, has announced that it will be offering its subscription service ChatGPT Go for free to users in India for one year. This limited-time promotional offer will be available to those who sign up starting November 4, coinciding with the company’s DevDay Exchange event in Bengaluru.
ChatGPT Go, which was launched in India in August, provides users with higher message limits, image generation capabilities, and the ability to upload files. The decision to make the service free for a year comes in response to a significant increase in demand since its initial launch, with OpenAI reporting that paid ChatGPT subscriptions in India more than doubled in the first month.
Nick Turley, Vice President and Head of ChatGPT, expressed his excitement about the adoption and creativity shown by users in India since the launch of ChatGPT Go. He stated, “Ahead of our first DevDay Exchange event in India, we’re making ChatGPT Go freely available for a year to help more people across India easily access and benefit from advanced AI.”
India has quickly become ChatGPT’s second-largest market and one of its fastest-growing markets, according to OpenAI. The company’s decision to offer the service for free aligns with its ‘India-first’ approach and supports the government’s IndiaAI Mission, which aims to boost the country’s artificial intelligence ecosystem.
Existing ChatGPT Go subscribers in India will also be able to enjoy the 12-month free access. OpenAI highlighted that millions of users in India, including developers, students, and professionals, already rely on ChatGPT for learning and productivity purposes.
The company’s expansion of ChatGPT Go to nearly 90 markets globally is a testament to India’s strong early response and its role as a key driver of OpenAI’s global AI adoption strategy.
