A public feud has erupted within the Kailashahar Municipal Council, led by the BJP, with the Chairman, Chapala Rani Debroy, openly accusing the Vice-Chairman, Nitish Dey, of obstructing development work. The conflict has notably stalled the construction of much-needed pink toilets for children and women in the Kailashahar municipal area and the broader Kailashahar town.
Despite various development projects underway in the BJP-administered Kailashahar Municipal Council, Chairman Chapala Rani Debroy expressed her dismay during a press conference held at the council’s conference hall. She stated that Vice-Chairman Nitish Dey is creating hurdles in the construction of toilets specifically designed for children and women in the urban areas. Debroy publicly accused the Vice-Chairman of insulting the women of the entire town through his obstructionist actions.
Present at the press conference were Chairman Chapala Rani Debroy, Chief Executive Officer of the Municipal Council Pradeep Sarkar, Deputy Executive Officer Biswajit Das, Councilors Jaydeep Das, Siddhartha Roy, Mansi Roy, and Town Supervisor Manish Das.
Chairman Debroy highlighted the significant development work undertaken by the Kailashahar Municipal Council in the past four years of her tenure, including new paved roads, CC roads, drains, public toilets, pond excavation, vendor sheds, road repairs, office buildings, parks, pond renovations, and the provision of piped water to households. She emphasized that these development activities are ongoing.
However, Chairman Debroy pointed out the lack of dedicated toilets for women in Kailashahar town. To address this, a meeting was held on July 12, 2024, attended by both Chairman Chapala Rani Debroy and Vice-Chairman Nitish Dey, where a written resolution was passed to construct toilets at various key points in the town.
Following this decision, six high-quality pink toilets for children and women were sanctioned for Kailashahar town under a flagship scheme of the Prime Minister, fully funded by the central government, with an estimated cost of Rs.8.5 lakh per unit.
After the commencement of construction at various locations, Chairman Debroy alleged that Vice-Chairman Nitish Dey and Kailashahar Mandal President Pritam Ghosh obstructed the construction of a pink toilet behind the Lions Club at Cargill Corner, leading to the work being halted.
Chairman Debroy further revealed that while she was initially hesitant about constructing a toilet at Cargill Corner, it was Vice-Chairman Nitish Dey himself who proposed the location during the July 12, 2024, municipal council meeting. The construction at Cargill Corner began based on this proposal.
Subsequently, Mandal President Pritam Ghosh and Vice-Chairman Nitish Dey allegedly stopped the construction work at Cargill Corner without informing the Municipal Council or the administration, later informing local media that the toilet was being illegally constructed without the Vice-Chairman’s knowledge.
Chairman Chapala Rani Debroy presented the official register from the July 12, 2024, meeting, bearing the signature of Vice-Chairman Nitish Dey, which documented the written resolution to construct toilets at various locations, including Cargill Corner. She also accused local Mandal President Pritam Ghosh of frequently obstructing various decisions and works of the Municipal Council.
Through the press conference, Chairman Chapala Rani Debroy openly criticized Mandal President Pritam Ghosh and Vice-Chairman Nitish Dey for hindering development work, a situation that has reportedly drawn public condemnation from the residents of Kailashahar town.
