Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said that India has shown how democratic institutions and processes can deliver stability, speed and scale, strengthening democracy in a diverse nation.Addressing the Conference of Speakers and Presiding Officers of the Commonwealth at Samvidhan Sadan here, Mr Modi said India has successfully turned its diversity into the strength of its democracy. He underlined that in India, democracy means last-mile delivery, with the government working in the spirit of public welfare for every individual without any discrimination.The Prime Minister said nearly 25 crore people have been lifted out of poverty in recent years, adding that people’s aspirations have been made the top priority of governance. He noted that inclusive development has helped India emerge as the fastest-growing major economy.Highlighting key achievements, Mr Modi said India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has become the world’s largest digital payment system. He also pointed out that India is the world’s largest vaccine producer and the second-largest steel producer.Stating that this was the fourth time India was hosting the Conference of Commonwealth Speakers and Presiding Officers, the Prime Minister said India continues to raise the concerns of the Global South on global platforms. He added that during India’s G20 Presidency, the priorities of the Global South were placed at the centre of the global agenda.
