News Report:
Pulse Polio Sunday was observed across Tripura on 21 December 2025, in line with the nationwide observance of National Immunisation Day. The state-level programme was inaugurated at Maharani Tulsibati Girls’ Higher Secondary School, Agartala, by Kiran Gitte, Secretary of the Health and Family Welfare Department, as the chief guest.
Although India has remained polio-free for the past 14 years, recent cases reported in neighbouring countries have raised concerns about the possible re-entry of the virus. To maintain India’s polio-free status, the Pulse Polio Immunisation programme is being conducted once again, targeting all children below five years of age with two drops of oral polio vaccine, which protects them from lifelong paralysis.
Across Tripura, special vaccination camps have been set up at temporary booths, schools, sub-health centres, anganwadi centres, and hospitals. The Health Department has made extensive preparations to ensure the success of the campaign. This year, a total of 3,40,874 children aged between 0 and 5 years will be administered the polio dose across 3,409 vaccination booths, with the support of 13,636 vaccinators and supervision by 682 supervisors.
Children who are unable to receive the vaccine on 21 December will be covered through door-to-door visits by ASHA workers and health staff on 22 and 23 December 2025, ensuring no child is left out of the programme.
District-wise coverage includes 68,348 children in West Tripura, 28,100 in Unakoti, 36,389 in South Tripura, 47,656 in Sepahijala, 45,772 in North Tripura, 29,948 in Khowai, 36,976 in Gomati, and 47,685 in Dhalai district.
The Health Department has also intensified monitoring and public awareness activities across the state, reaffirming its commitment to the slogan: “Two drops today, a healthy life forever.”
Among those present at the inaugural programme were Ravel Hemendra Kumar, Special Secretary of the Education Department; Saju Waheed A, Mission Director of the National Health Mission; Dr Vishal Kumar, District Magistrate & Collector of West Tripura; Dr Debashi Debbarma, Director of Health Services; and Dr Anjan Das, Director of Family Welfare and Disease Prevention, among others.
