In a major infrastructure push aimed at modernizing railway connectivity in Northeast India, redevelopment work has officially commenced at 60 railway stations under the ambitious Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. These stations fall within the jurisdiction of the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR), which spans across the eight northeastern states and parts of Bihar and West Bengal.
The Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, launched by the Ministry of Railways, envisions the holistic transformation of railway stations across the country, with a focus on modern passenger amenities, enhanced accessibility, upgraded infrastructure, and sustainable development. A total of 92 stations under the NFR zone have been identified for redevelopment, with 60 projects already in progress in this phase.
The redevelopment will include facilities such as improved platforms, upgraded waiting areas, modernized ticket counters, advanced lighting systems, clean and accessible restrooms, and digital signage. Additionally, emphasis is being placed on eco-friendly design, energy efficiency, and smart technology integration to provide a seamless and world-class travel experience.
This initiative is expected to significantly boost connectivity, promote tourism, and stimulate economic growth in the northeastern region. It also aims to reflect local culture and heritage through station architecture, making them gateways to regional identity.
The Amrit Bharat Station Scheme is a part of the Indian government’s broader commitment to transforming public infrastructure and delivering high-quality services to citizens. With 60 stations already under redevelopment, Northeast India is set to witness a transportation renaissance that will benefit millions of passengers.
