Renowned actor and road safety activist Ilias Kanchan has officially entered the political arena by launching the new party, Janata Party Bangladesh. The party’s formation was announced during an event at the InterContinental Dhaka in Shahbagh, with the slogan “Gorbo Mora Insafer Bangladesh”. Former BNP vice-chairman Shawkat Mahmud has been appointed as the party’s secretary general, and former state minister Golam Sarwar Milon as its spokesperson.
The launch of Janata Party Bangladesh signifies a diverse group of individuals coming together, including politicians, journalists, lawyers, retired military officers, and former civil servants. Ilias Kanchan expressed that the party is prepared to contest in the upcoming national elections and aims to field candidates in all 300 constituencies.
Ilias Kanchan, who founded the Nirapad Sarak Chai movement after the tragic death of his wife in a road accident in 1993, has been a prominent advocate for road safety in Bangladesh. Despite being urged to enter politics in the past, this marks his first official foray into the political sphere.
The party’s announcement comes at a time of political change in Bangladesh, with the upcoming national elections drawing closer. Janata Party Bangladesh aims to bring together experienced individuals from various backgrounds to create a unique platform for political change in the country.
