AGARTALA: Highlighting the growing concerns of urban residents, the Sadar District Congress organized a protest program today, culminating in the submission of a formal deputation to the municipal authorities. The delegation raised several pressing issues regarding the maintenance and basic services within the Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) areas.
The program saw a significant gathering of Congress workers and local residents who marched to the municipal office to voice their dissatisfaction with the current state of civic amenities.
Key Issues Highlighted in the Deputation
The Congress leadership presented a comprehensive list of grievances that have been affecting the daily lives of citizens across various wards. The primary demands included:
- Drainage and Waterlogging: Immediate measures to desilt drains and upgrade the sewage system to prevent artificial flooding during the upcoming monsoon season.
- Drinking Water Crisis: Ensuring a regular and clean supply of piped water to all households, specifically in the peripheral wards where shortages are frequent.
- Street Lighting and Safety: Repairing defunct street lights to ensure public safety, especially for women and the elderly, during evening hours.
- Road Maintenance: Urgent repair of dilapidated inner-city roads and lanes that have become hazardous for commuters and pedestrians alike.
- Waste Management: Improving the frequency of garbage collection and addressing the issue of illegal dumping sites within residential clusters.
“Taxes are High, Services are Low,” Says Congress Leadership
Speaking to the media during the deputation, Sadar District Congress leaders alleged that while the municipal taxes have seen a steady rise, the quality of services provided by the AMC has significantly declined.
”The common people are paying their taxes diligently, but in return, they are struggling for basic necessities like clean water and motorable roads. This deputation is a wake-up call for the municipal administration. If these issues are not resolved within a stipulated timeframe, we will be forced to launch a larger democratic movement,” a senior Congress representative stated.
Administrative Assurance
The deputation was received by senior officials of the Municipal Corporation. The authorities assured the Congress delegation that the points raised would be reviewed by the technical teams and that necessary steps would be taken to address the most critical infrastructure gaps on a priority basis.
The Congress party has vowed to monitor the progress of these civic works closely and has urged residents to report local grievances to their respective ward committees.
