For the past three months, 24 sanitation workers of the Melaghar Municipality have not been paid their salaries. In protest, they sat in front of the main gate of the municipality office holding empty plates in their hands!
Using the skill of begging with plates in hand, the sanitation workers sat in protest in front of the municipality office. It has been learned that the sanitation workers under the Melaghar Municipality have been deprived of their rightful wages for the past 5 months. Those sanitation workers who work under the municipality for cleanliness support their families, but the Melaghar Municipality has withheld their wages from the end of the month, leaving them with only a few rupees to rely on. Despite repeated requests to the municipality officials at the gate of the municipality every month and every day, the sanitation workers’ rightful wages are not being paid. However, the entire municipality collects taxes from the residents of Melaghar every month but chooses to deprive those who maintain cleanliness through their daily work of their rightful wages.
The sanitation workers, who have not received their rightful wages for the past 5 months, have been pushed to almost unbearable conditions in their families, yet the Melaghar Municipality continues to withhold their rightful dues. Every time the sanitation workers have gone to the municipality office seeking their wages, they have been assured, but no work has been done. Finally, on Thursday afternoon, the sanitation workers were forced to sit in protest in front of the Melaghar Municipality office, begging with plates in hand. Their demand is to get their rightful dues. Many argue that it is solely the negligence of the Melaghar Municipality that has led to the sanitation workers being deprived of their rightful wages for so long.
