Sanju Samson made history on Tuesday, May 20, as he became the first player in the world to score 4000 runs in the Indian Premier League (IPL) for the Rajasthan Royals. Leading his team in IPL 2025, Samson achieved this milestone during the team’s last league match of the ongoing season against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in Delhi.
In his 149th match for the Jaipur-based franchise, Samson needed 15 runs to reach the 4000-run mark and did so by hitting CSK’s Ravichandran Ashwin for a six in the seventh over of the 188-run chase. With this achievement, Samson now leads the list of most runs scored for Rajasthan Royals in the IPL.
The batting sensation from Kerala now has a total of 4001* runs for RR, surpassing the likes of Jos Buttler, Ajinkya Rahane, and Shane Watson. Additionally, Samson becomes the seventh batter in the world to accumulate 4000 or more runs for a single team in the IPL.
With an overall tally of 4679 runs in 177 IPL matches, including his time with Delhi Capitals, Samson’s prowess with the bat is undeniable. If he manages to hit at least two more sixes in the ongoing match, he will join an elite group of Indian batters who have hit 350 or more sixes in T20 cricket.
Currently, Rohit Sharma leads the pack with 542 sixes in T20s, followed by Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, and MS Dhoni. Samson’s aggressive batting style has seen him hit 349* sixes so far, putting him in the league of top Indian six-hitters in T20 cricket.
The overall record for hitting the most sixes in T20 cricket belongs to Chris Gayle, who has smashed an impressive 1056 sixes in his T20 career. As Samson continues to make waves in the IPL and T20 cricket, his name is sure to be remembered among the greats of the game.
