Agartala | February 28, 2026
In a strong display of student solidarity, the Student Federation of India (SFI) and the Tribal Students’ Union (TSU) organized a joint protest rally in the capital today. The demonstration was held to condemn the alleged “inhumane atrocities” committed by the police against students at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and Delhi University (DU) during recent protests in the national capital.
The rally, which saw a large turnout of student activists and youth leaders, wound through the main streets of Agartala, culminating in a protest meeting where leaders lashed out at the central authorities.
Condemning the Crackdown on Campus
The SFI and TSU leadership alleged that the police action in Delhi was an attempt to silence the democratic voice of the student community. They claimed that students were subjected to physical assault and arbitrary detention while peacefully raising demands related to educational rights and campus democracy.
Key Issues Raised During the Rally:
- Assault on Democratic Rights: Speakers argued that the use of force within university campuses is a violation of academic sanctity.
- National Solidarity: The protest aimed to send a message of support from Tripura to the students in Delhi, emphasizing that the student community across India remains united.
- Call for Accountability: The organizations demanded a high-level judicial inquiry into the police conduct and the immediate withdrawal of “false cases” filed against student activists.
“Voices Cannot Be Muzzled” — Student Leaders
Addressing the gathering, leaders from both SFI and TSU warned that state-sponsored intimidation would only strengthen their resolve.
”The brutal crackdown on students at JNU and DU is not an isolated incident; it is a systematic attack on those who dare to question the system. From Agartala to Delhi, we will continue to fight for the rights of the student community. Our voices cannot be muzzled by police batons,” a senior SFI leader stated.
Protest Conclusion
The rally concluded with the burning of effigies in some locations to register their protest. The student unions have warned of further intensive movements if the “repression” against students in national universities does not cease immediately.
While the rally remained largely peaceful, a heavy contingent of Tripura Police was deployed along the route to ensure law and order.
