News Report:
The Special Investigation Report (SIR) on electoral rolls in West Bengal has highlighted large-scale discrepancies, stating that nearly 90 lakh voter entries require verification due to being marked as inactive, duplicate, or potentially invalid. The findings have sparked political debate across the state, with parties trading accusations over the integrity of the voter database.
According to officials familiar with the assessment, the irregularities include mismatched records, outdated entries, and voters who could not be traced during physical verification drives. The Election Commission is expected to conduct further checks before taking corrective steps.
Opposition parties have seized upon the findings, alleging systematic lapses, while the ruling establishment has dismissed such claims as politically motivated. The Election Commission has appealed for calm, stating that the verification process is routine and ongoing.
Authorities emphasised that any final determination regarding invalid or “dead” voter entries will be made only after a full review and cross-verification at the booth level.
The matter is likely to gain further traction as political stakeholders await the next update from the Commission.
