AGARTALA: Continuing the statewide momentum for gender equality, the Department of Social Welfare and Social Education (SWSE) organized the state-level celebration of International Women’s Day 2026 today. The grand event was held at the Rabindra Satabarshiki Bhavan, bringing together women achievers, self-help groups (SHGs), and administrative leaders to celebrate the spirit of “Nari Shakti.”
The ceremony was inaugurated by the Minister for Social Welfare and Social Education, Shri Tinku Roy, who graced the occasion as the Chief Guest and the official inaugurator.
Minister Tinku Roy’s Address: Towards a “Child Marriage-Free” Tripura
In his keynote address, Minister Tinku Roy emphasized that the state government is moving beyond mere “women’s welfare” toward a model of “women-led development.” * Eradicating Social Evils: The Minister issued a clarion call to eliminate child marriage and gender-based violence, describing them as significant barriers to the state’s progress. He noted that recent government initiatives have already prevented over 700 child marriages in the past nine months.
- Economic Empowerment: He highlighted the success of the Lakhpati Didi initiative and the role of the Tripura Rural Livelihood Mission (TRLM) in providing sustainable livelihoods to thousands of women.
- Workplace Safety: Roy also spoke about the implementation of the SHe-Box portal to ensure safe and dignified workplaces for women across all sectors in Tripura.
Dignitaries Call for Collective Action
The event featured several prominent voices dedicated to the protection of women and children’s rights:
- Jharna Debbarma, Chairperson of the Tripura Commission for Women, spoke about the ongoing ‘Jan Sunwai’ (Public Hearing) programs across the state, designed to provide speedy justice to women.
- Jayanti Debbarma, Chairperson of the Tripura State Commission for Protection of Child Rights, emphasized the need for social awareness alongside legal measures to protect the girl child.
- Other senior officials from the SWSE department were also in attendance, reinforcing the administration’s commitment to gender-sensitive governance.
Highlights of the Event
The celebration featured a series of cultural performances and the felicitation of exemplary women who have broken barriers in various fields. A special segment was dedicated to the success stories of SHG members, showcasing how collective action is transforming the rural economy of Tripura.
