News Report:
Agartala, Tripura: The Tripura Chakma Students Association (TCSA) organised a press conference at the Agartala Press Club on December 28, 2025, announcing a series of protest programmes following a violent attack on Chakma students outside the state.
Addressing the media, TCSA leaders narrated a disturbing incident that took place on December 9, 2025, at around 6:15 PM, when Chakma students were going to a local market to buy groceries. According to the association, a group of local miscreants verbally abused the students using racial slurs such as “Chink-Minki,” “Chinese,” and “Momos,” and used obscene language.
When Michal Chakma appealed to them to stop, stating that they are Indian citizens and students, the attackers allegedly assaulted him with iron rods, causing serious injuries. His brother Anjel Chakma tried to intervene but was reportedly stabbed multiple times in the neck and abdomen. Students from the Northeast immediately rushed the injured to a hospital in Dehradun for emergency treatment.
TCSA further alleged that when students went to the local police station between 8 PM and 9 PM on the same day to file an FIR, the police initially refused to register the complaint, terming the incident “not serious.” Despite police visits to the spot on December 10 and 11, no FIR was registered. The association described this as gross police negligence.
According to TCSA, after discussions with senior retired IPS officers—who also spoke to the local police—the seriousness of the incident was acknowledged, and the FIR was finally registered on December 12, 2025.
In response, TCSA announced that a candlelight vigil will be held on December 29, 2025, at 4:30 PM in Agartala city. This will be followed by the submission of a memorandum to the Chief Minister of Tripura on December 30, 2025, at 10:00 AM, demanding justice, accountability, and protection for students from indigenous and Northeast communities.
Separately, the Tripura Indigenous Students Federation (TISF) also announced a candlelight rally to be held on December 29 at 4:00 PM, from Astabal to Rajbari Gate in Agartala, in solidarity with the victims.
Student organisations demanded strict action against the accused, accountability for police inaction, and stronger safeguards against racial discrimination and violence targeting students from indigenous and Northeast communities.
