A heart-wrenching incident unfolded in Tripura’s Gomati district on September 27 when a three-month-old baby girl was rescued by police after reports surfaced that her parents had allegedly sold her to another family.
The distressing case came to light after media reports shed light on the dire situation of a destitute couple residing in Brajendrapra village in Karbook subdivision. The couple, struggling in extreme poverty, reportedly made the heartbreaking decision to hand over their infant daughter to a family in Madhumogpara.
Prompt action was taken by authorities upon learning of the situation. Gamanjoy Reang, Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) of Karbook, stated, “We contacted the couple after coming across the media reports. Based on the information provided, a police team visited Ranjit Chakma’s house in Madhumogpara and found the baby.”
It was conveyed to the parents that the transfer of children to another family without following legal procedures is unlawful. The baby was subsequently reunited with her biological family, and as of now, no formal case has been registered.
The struggling parents, who already have two children, reside in abject poverty, with the father eking out a living as a daily wage laborer. This distressing incident underscores the critical need for legal safeguards to protect vulnerable children and prevent such tragic situations from occurring.
Authorities stress the importance of ensuring that proper legal channels are followed in cases involving the welfare of children in vulnerable families. The incident serves as a sobering reminder of the immense challenges faced by families living in poverty and the urgent need for effective support systems to safeguard the well-being of children.
