Tipra Motha Party legislator Ranjit Debbarma has taken a strong stance on the issue of illegal migration in Tripura by writing a letter to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, urging for the immediate implementation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in the state. Debbarma’s letter comes in response to directives issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs on May 19, 2025, which called for the detection and deportation of illegal migrants within 30 days.
Despite his appeals to various state authorities, including the Chief Secretary, DGP, district magistrates, police superintendents, Assam Rifles, and BSF officials, Debbarma claims that the Tripura government has not taken adequate steps to set up detention camps or establish Special Task Forces (STFs) in all districts. He expressed concern over the lack of action by the state government in addressing the issue of illegal migration.
Debbarma highlighted the ongoing problem of illegal infiltration in Tripura, stating that some migrants are involved in activities detrimental to India’s security and sovereignty. He criticized the state’s approach as “an eye wash” and warned that the national security of Tripura and India is at risk due to the continued influx of illegal migrants.
The MLA called for the Centre to intervene and implement the NRC in Tripura, similar to the process carried out in Assam, with the involvement of central police and administrative authorities. He emphasized the need for a comprehensive strategy to address illegal migration in Tripura and protect the state and country from potential threats posed by illegal infiltrators.
Debbarma’s letter to Amit Shah underscores the urgent need for action to address the issue of illegal migration in Tripura and protect national security and sovereignty. It remains to be seen how the Centre will respond to his plea for the implementation of the NRC in the state.
