AGARTALA: In a major political development ahead of the upcoming TTAADC (Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council) elections, the Tipra Motha Party faced a significant setback in the Natunbazar-Malbasa constituency. During a high-octane joining ceremony today, approximately 700 voters from diverse backgrounds officially severed ties with Tipra Motha to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
The new members were formally welcomed into the party fold by Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha, who personally handed over the saffron flag to the defecting leaders.
Shift in the Tribal Heartland
The mass induction is being viewed as a strategic victory for the BJP in a region historically considered a stronghold for regional indigenous parties. The defectors reportedly include several influential grassroots organizers and youth leaders who expressed disillusionment with the current leadership of Tipra Motha.
Key Highlights of the Joining:
- Scale of Defection: 700 voters from the Natunbazar-Malbasa area joined the BJP.
- TTAADC 2026 Context: The joining comes just ten days before the scheduled TTAADC polls on April 12, potentially tilting the balance in this crucial constituency.
- Geographical Scope: The induction included residents from several remote hamlets under the Malbasa and Natunbazar blocks.
Chief Minister’s Statement
Addressing the gathering, Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha emphasized that the people of the hills are increasingly realizing that the “Double Engine” government is their true partner in progress.
”Today’s joining in Natunbazar-Malbasa is a clear message that the narrative of division is failing. These 700 brothers and sisters have joined the BJP because they want development, better roads, and quality education for their children. Our government does not believe in hollow promises; we believe in ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas.’ I welcome everyone to the BJP family and assure you that together we will build a ‘Srestha TTAADC’ within a ‘Srestha Tripura’,” the Chief Minister asserted.
Strategic Implications
Political analysts suggest that this exodus from Tipra Motha in the South Tripura district could trigger a domino effect in neighboring constituencies. The BJP state leadership has been working tirelessly to highlight the benefits of central schemes like PM-JANMAN and PMAY in tribal areas to counter the regionalist “Greater Tipraland” demand.
Dignitaries Present:
Apart from the Chief Minister, several senior BJP state leaders, district presidents, and local Mandal coordinators were present to witness the ceremony. The event concluded with a rally through the Natunbazar market, where slogans of “BJP Zindabad” resonated throughout the afternoon.
