News Report (English):
Agartala, Tripura — Allegations of political harassment surfaced in Tripura as the Trinamool Congress (TMC) accused local workers of the BJP and BLP of unlawfully demanding documents from Bengali residents under the pretext of identity verification — despite there being no official NRC or SIR declaration by the Election Commission.
According to TMC, Bengali citizens in various rural and urban areas are being harassed, with many being allegedly branded as “Bangladeshi” or even “Rohingya” due to political targeting.
Youth Trinamool Congress president Santanu Saha today publicly addressed the issue, claiming that opposition party workers and supporters were being deliberately identified as illegal immigrants to intimidate them and influence the political environment.
In protest against the alleged misuse of SIR fears and voter exclusion threats, the TMC organized a two-hour mass sit-in demonstration at the Gandhi statue at Circuit House. The party states that local police authorities were informed beforehand, but no official response or protection was provided.
As part of the protest, TMC members attempted to march from Vivekananda Maidan toward the Gandhi statue. However, police blocked the procession along the route, preventing them from reaching the designated site. In response, demonstrators sat on the road, chanting slogans and warning that no Indian citizen would be allowed to be harassed or removed from the voter list under the false label of SIR or NRC.
TMC leadership reiterated that it would firmly resist any attempt to intimidate Bengali-speaking citizens or undermine their legitimate voting rights.
