News Report:
Senior Tipra Motha Party (TMP) leader and former MLA Rajeshwar Debbarma has appealed to Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha to take immediate action for the preservation and restoration of the royal cremation ground situated along the banks of the River Howrah in central Agartala. The site, historically significant as the resting place of the Manikya dynasty—which ruled Tripura for more than 500 years—has reportedly fallen into a state of neglect.
In a letter submitted on Friday, Debbarma expressed deep concern over the deteriorating condition of the heritage site. He said he visited the cremation ground on November 27, the death anniversary of Maharaja Kirit Bikram Kishore Manikya Deb Barman, to pay homage, only to find the surrounding area strewn with garbage and lacking proper upkeep.
Calling the state of the premises “distressing and unacceptable,” Debbarma urged the government to declare the location a protected heritage site. He emphasized that the cremation ground stands as a vital symbol of Tripura’s cultural roots and historical identity, as it is the final resting place of several members of the Manikya royal lineage.
The TMP leader insisted that swift intervention, including restoration, cleaning, and long-term maintenance, is necessary to preserve the site’s historical value. He added that safeguarding the royal cremation ground would help ensure that future generations remain connected to the rich legacy of the Manikya rulers who shaped Tripura’s history.
