A tragic landslide in Sikkim has left three people dead, including two army personnel, and six security personnel missing. The landslide occurred at a military camp in Chhaten on Sunday evening, following heavy rainfall in the area. Rescue operations are ongoing, with four individuals already rescued with minor injuries.
In addition to the casualties, around 1,500 tourists are stranded in north Sikkim due to the relentless rain that has been pounding the region for the past few days. Mangan district has been particularly affected, with heavy rains causing damage to two important bridges – the Phidang Bridge in the Dzongu region and the Sangkalang Bailey Bridge connecting Mangan to Chungthang.
The Phidang Bridge was damaged by the strong current of the Teesta River, while the Sangkalang Bailey Bridge suffered partial damage due to the same reason. As a result, the National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd (NHIDCL) has imposed intermittent restrictions on traffic movement on the NH-10 (Sevoke to Rangpo section) on June 2 and 3.
The situation in Sikkim remains critical, with rescue efforts ongoing and authorities working to ensure the safety of those affected by the landslide and the heavy rainfall. The Indian Army and other emergency services are working tirelessly to provide assistance and support to those in need.
