Tension erupted during the celebration of the 48th Kokborok Day on Monday as tribal students staged a protest demanding the adoption of the Roman script for the Kokborok language. The protesters blocked a rally procession, bringing the programme to a temporary halt and causing disruption at the venue.According to reports, the students raised slogans and displayed placards highlighting their long-standing demand. Police personnel rushed to the spot and held discussions with the demonstrators, urging them to withdraw the protest and allow the event to continue peacefully. However, the protesters remained firm on their demand and refused to disperse.Following repeated attempts to restore normalcy, the police detained the protesting students and shifted them to the AD Nagar Police Line Ground as a preventive measure to avoid further escalation of the situation.Security was later tightened in the area, and the programme resumed under police supervision. The incident has once again brought the issue of the Kokborok script into the spotlight, reflecting growing demands from sections of the tribal student community for official recognition of the Roman script.
