Tripura has achieved a significant milestone in road safety with a 34% decrease in road traffic accident (RTA) deaths this year, as announced by Superintendent of Traffic Police, Kanta Jangir. This achievement comes as a result of the department’s intensified crackdown on traffic violations since June 9.
Speaking to the media on Thursday, SP Jangir highlighted the special statewide drive against non-standard and fake number plates, plate tampering, loud silencers, and road permit violations. Operations were conducted at key points in Agartala, including North Gate, RMS Chowmuhani, Ashram Chowmuhani, AD Nagar, and Post Office Chowmuhani. A total of 635 non-standard number plates were identified, with notices and challans issued and 26 bikes seized. In a single day, 55 fake or non-standard plates were detected and seized.
In addition to these enforcement measures, a dedicated team has surveyed black spots and accident-prone areas to identify the root causes of accidents. The findings will be submitted to the relevant department for necessary action. Furthermore, there has been an increase in nakas (checkpoints) and the deployment of interceptor vehicles. Special evening drives from 6 PM to 8 PM are also being conducted across the state.
SP Jangir expressed satisfaction with the results of these efforts, stating that compared to last year, overall road traffic accidents have decreased by 11%, fatal accidents by 32%, and deaths by 34%. These statistics demonstrate the effectiveness of the measures taken by the Tripura Traffic Police in improving road safety in the state.
